Nearly 300 students and teachers from 16 area high schools attended the Jandoli School of Communicationβs 2024 Communications Day at ΒιΆΉΣ³» Friday, April 12.
βNothing beats having hundreds of young people interested in communication and journalism come to campus,β said Aaron Chimbel, dean of the Jandoli School. βI am thankful the teachers brought these energetic and engaged students to learn more about our fields and the many opportunities they can pursue in them. What a fun day!β
CommDay, originally called Press Day, has a long history at ΒιΆΉΣ³» dating back to 1936. Since 1987, it has been known as Communications Day.
This year, students participated in workshops on writing, disinformation, photography, advertising, media ethics, local news, social media, sports broadcasting and a special live broadcast journalism experience with SBU-TV, the student news station.
Kate Welshofer, β96, an award-winning broadcast journalist who most recently was an anchor at WGRZ-TV in Buffalo, delivered the keynote address.
Students had the opportunity to submit their best work for the CommDay competition in video, photography and writing categories.
Chimbel announced the following winners, who will be granted scholarships if they attend ΒιΆΉΣ³». The scholarships will be continued each year up to four years for students who major in one of the Jandoli School undergrad programs.
